Giving it up for Lent

Yesterday, I shared with you Anne Jackson’s post about her giving up the internet for Lent. Today I saw a few more posts from area bloggers on Lent, which began today. Below is a sample.

In the days following Epiphany a series of Carnival parties, parades and masked balls lead up to Mardi Gras, the season’s final day of celebration. Carnival ends abrubtly at midnight on Tuesday with the onset of Ash Wednesday when the forty days of abstinence and fasting known as Lent begins.

So now is the time for a New Phase: Lent. A purple season, a time for prayer, fasting, and self-denial. A time for looking inward, as well as looking upward. I, for one, need a New Phase. I need a push into a renewed sense of who I am in Christ. I’m hoping that Lent will do that for me. Actually, it already has. Preparing for this Lent has been a great blessing to me. I’m hoping that God has even more in store.

This is surprising for any number of reasons. One, we’re Methodists of the strain that doesn’t just not celebrate Lent but views Lent as like a second Christmas, where you get to run around mocking your Catholic friends–”Mmm, this Friday cheeseburger sure is good.” “Oh, yum, warm chocolate chip cookies. You didn’t give up chocolate for Lent did you? Such a shame.”

I laugh that I’m giving up raisins for Lent. I’ve never celebrated Lent and I don’t like raisins, so I guess I need to work on my spiritual fortitude.
