Newscoma posted details of a racist email sent from Sherri Goforth, legislative aid for Sen. Diane Black (R-Gallatin). The email depicts the Presidents of the United States with President Barack Obama as a pair of eyes in a black background.
I spoke with Sherri Goforth minutes ago to confirm she sent this email. She confirmed she had sent it and also said she had received a letter of reprimand from her superiors but said she will stay on the job.
When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.
“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”

I recognized most of the names as being Republican staffers. I don’t know which one of them was grossed out enough by this to try to get word to the folks he or she thought could bring it to light, but that person deserves a pat on the back. That anyone thought e-mailing that photo was funny, cute, clever, or anything close to appropriate boggles the mind. That it was a staffer for State Senator Diane Black, chair of the Senate Republican Caucus, well, what can I say. Tennessee is the state of Chip “Barack the Magic Negro” Saltsman; it seems the problem is endemic to the TNGOP. I hope Sen. Black does the right thing and puts her house in order.
Update #2: Just spoke with Alice Bingham, secretary for Sen. Tim Burchett and one of the people on Goforth’s “wrong list.” She says she can’t remember whether or not she opened it, but she guessed she probably just deleted it, saying that “a lot of crap” gets sent out via the inter-congressional interwebs.
It’s bad enough that a staffer for an elected official is racist enough to distribute something like this by e-mail. It’s even worse that they are so stupid as to think it wouldn’t surface with their name attached to it.
Diane Black is a joke. A Right Wing Republican lump of dog excrement that has no business breathing my air, much less representing Tennesseans in Nashville.
No reason to think that anyone working for her is any more human. This is one of the things that is so very wrong with the great state of Tennessee. The level of absolute dumb-fuck we have to endure to reside in such a beautiful land.
It is wrong for elected officials and their staff to sling this racist swill disguised as ‘humor’ — so why am I also sharing this with you? To shame the senator and Goforth, and because I’ve seen and heard what such nasty racial hatred can do to people, how it nurtures this madness and helps it grow. Well, I won’t stand for it. Rep. John DeBerry, the chairman of the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators, said the incident reflects poorly on Tennessee and lawmakers.
“It’s unfortunate, and it’s another in a series of unfortunate incidents that have happened across this country with this president,” he said. “It sends the wrong message from the state of Tennessee, and it sends the wrong message from the House and Senate. I wish it hadn’t happened.”
It’s funny, see, because Obama’s black and so his official portrait is a pair of cartoon eyeballs on a black background. Don’t these people have some gun bills to pass, or something?
UPDATE 5:33pm - The Tennessee Democratic Party issued a release calling on Sen. Black to fire Sherri Goforth. Here is a brief excerpt:
“I am calling on Sen. Black to reject this racist smear and fire this staffer who, on state government time, on state government computers, using a state government email account, launched this bigoted attack on our president,” Forrester said. “Keeping her on the staff would send the message that this type of behavior is condoned by the House Republican Caucus.”

Amazing and discouraging. I am beginning to believe that the Republican party in Tenn. is stuck in a time warp pre-1965 or so. Will this country ever be able to look at a person and see that person instead of the color of that person? I am so sick of so many of the Republicans I know that are so judgemental of everyone else and be able to sit in church on Sunday after sending emails like this one. Arrogance pure and simple. Makes me wonder what is preached in the churches that are primarily Republican. I received this same email quite some time back and I would hope that others do what I did and delete it instead of passing it on. I would also like to know if the ones on the “wrong email list” deleted or forwarded and if we as Tennessee taxpayers paid them to do it. I would like to see her on Newschannel 5, WSMV channel 4 and WKRN channel 2 doing a PUBLIC apology and then see her in the unemployment line. Let’s get the definition of “racism” straight, shall we? It’s not just believing one’s race is superior to another. There are three definitions:
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
Clearly, this image of President Obama, alongside the stately, respectful images of every other President, defines the word “racism.” It is separating him out in cartoonish fashion, by comparison with all other white presidents. It demonstrates an intolerance for the idea of a black person being President.
This person has the right to express her racism any way she wants in private. This was not done in private; all government emails are open to public scrutiny. And she also has to accept the consequences of her actions.

Does the state not have a policy prohibiting this type of behavior by state employees? If not, they should have one making it a dismissable offense to send any email not related to state business.

This is deplorable - how many hours were spent in composing this offal ? There seems to be a boatload of the stuff coming from south of the Mason Dixon line. As a “damn” Yankee who supports our president and what he stands for I am angry that that this stupidity is being tolerated.
This is not about being politically correct it is about being humanely and constitutionally correct. It is about being the kind of American who will not tolerate this sort of debasement in the guise of humor. i just wanted to comment on the CNN piece on this topic itself, which i believe to be offensive- hopefully this message can be forwarded to their site. i feel Diane Black answered her questions truthfully and the anchor over at CNN news was prompted to use a history of racism in Tennessee asking if progress was really being made in the state. this i felt to be offensive to any Tennessean. If the anchor had ever been to Tennessee, maybe she would see that we are not all racists. in fact, in all of the places we have been, i would say we are some of the most tolerant. maybe i cannot speak for the entire state, but for my own experience. also, on the issue itself, should she be fired? if she treated those of different races differently, yes. if she made judgment calls based on race, yes. but the simple fact of the matter is that if she did not actually act on those judgments while in office, then she did no wrong. Sending an email is personal. what she chooses to enact while in office is what we need to be concerned with, and if she did nothing of the sort, then i say that all the people who are in favor of her getting fired should leave her alone. if she did not act on her personal judgments, assuming that they are racist, then quite frankly, she is working hard to be concerned more with who she is serving than her own personal dilemmas.

Then, Black said she didn’t agree with Goforth’s message and cited as evidence her career in nursing. I am an ER nurse. I am disgusted that Black would try to invoke the nursing profession as some sort of mitigation or excuse for her unwillingness to take action. This is not a matter of people being overly sensitive concerning this email, or this aide trying to be funny. This email is racist, and a black eye on the state of Tennessee. I am a white man in my 40s, and a life-long republican, and anyone that can’t see this email for what it is, racial and racist, is in themselves racist… period.
This is also not an issue of free speech. You don’t have free speech when you are at work, especially when you work for the government. I served 6 years in the U.S. Navy, and knew people that were given a “Dishonorable” discharge for making jokes about the first President Bush during the first Gulf War. I have also worked for a company that fired people for sending out emails very similar to this. You don’t need to go to Human Resource to know what to do with this aide. The only reason you would go to Human Resource on this matter, which is so blatantly obvious, is to have an excuse not to fire this racist bigot, and cover your backside in the process. Any true leader would know what to do.
I watched the interview of State Senator Black on CNN, and what struck me the most is that she NEVER said that she, herself, wasn’t racist. She said she has worked with all kinds of people, but never said that she wasn’t racist or that she didn’t support racist behaviors by her staff. That was alarming to me.

The eMail Ms. Goforth dispatched is indefensible as is her poor excuse of sending it to the wrong list of people. Ms. Goforth used very poor judgment in sending the eMail to anyone or in thinking it was funny or entertaining.
In a sound bite it is easy to paint Ms. Goforth as a racist and a hater of the disadvantaged. Sherri is anything but a racist or a hater. If Sherri were known as the person she is, it would not be hard to understand why she was not fired.
I have known Sherri since 1968, the year she began her career in state government in Tennessee. I was so impressed by her, I employed her as my personal assistant for 13 years while she was not working in State government. I found Sherri to be a loving, loyal, compassionate, and intelligent person. I never saw her demonstrate anything but respect for everyone, regardless of their race. I know she goes out of her way to befriend people; I know she sees people as human beings. I know she has a heart for everyone. Sherri is not a racist; she is not a hater. She is not stupid.
Sherri has been married to the same man for over 40 years. Their family is an example for us all to admire and imitate. She and Steve have two adopted children, biological siblings, who were removed from their unfit biological parents by the State; the children were 9 and 10 at the time of adoption. The Goforths also have a special needs biological child with Downes Syndrome, now in her 30’s. A few years ago Steve quit his job to open a small take-out restaurant for Katie so she could become independent. Katie is the chef. The restaurant has been a big success. As a result Katie has made a name for herself; Sherri and Steve have given Katie a skill that will ensure her independence when they are gone. Katie is quite a remarkable person.
Sherri’s entire life has been one of hard work, endurance, sacrifice, and love. I never heard either Steve or Sherri complain about their circumstances. They focused on the challenge and the blessing. Sherri and Steve are supporters of the Special Olympics; they also work with parents of Downs children to see the blessing they have been given.
This unfortunate incident does not define Sherri Goforth. Sherri deserves another chance. Sherri truly has a heart for the whole world, without exception. We can all learn from this incident. We’ve all had lapses in good judgment. In the end, forgiveness always trumps castigation. We are all in this together.
Do we know if Sherri Goforth created the image? If not, did she get it from someone higher up the TN RNC and that is why she has not been fired?

I worked with Sherri on more than a few occasions and though she otherwise is a very nice person, she has a very low opinion on african americans. I will not give my identity away for obvious reasons, but she has a knack for making racial jokes, usually aimed at blacks, but sometimes mexicans. I can remember more than a few times having to get out of ears distance from her going on one of her ‘why america is being ruined by blacks and why we should just get rid of them all’. or ‘I saw some woman today holding hands with one of those monkeys…I just wanted to slap sense into her and tell her parents to get her away’ rants with her associates.

Watching your defense of Sherri Goforth was a throw back to the 1960s. If Washington, DC has not implemented a Sensitivity Program this would be an ideal startup. The program could be entitled “Surely We Go Forth in America Today”. I work for the GA Dept of Labor Vocational Rehabilitation Program. If I were to e-mail a cartoon of a wheelchair bound individual as slowing down traffic due to a lack of legs, a letter would be entered in my file and I would be fired. While this is a very mild example, I am approaching this from a sensitivity angle.

Obama is “in the dark” i.e. clueless
Obama is “a cartoon character” i.e. ridiculous

I don’t KNOW what it means, it could very well have been racist, the difference is I’m not assuming that I know. I was in a combat zone (Vietnam) for two plus years and sent directly to Korea the day of the Pueblo Crisis. In the Med-Evac Units (498th, Rvn, 377th Korea) we had Afro American rescue wounded from the battlefield without concern for race. I know of one who while under enemy fire went out in the field to help medics load a wounded soldier when a fellow medic didnt move because he was in shock. I have more respect for many Afro-Americans than Senators Diane Black and Rusty Depass. They are a discrace to America and should resign from the Senate. I DO NOT have one nano of respect for either.

It is generally accepted that there are racist in government in all 50 states., and that racist remarks are as acceptable in some circles as brushing one’s teeth..well maybe that’s a stretch because they maybe busy making cartoons… all jesting aside.. the picture is a very sad coment on the office of that state employee ; if her staff had the time to do such a thing, one cannot help but wonder what other unwarranted antics her office must be engaged in.
