3,000 local illegal immigrants ID'd through 287(g)
More than 3,000 illegal immigrants have been identified locally under Metro's use of a federal 287(g) program since its implementation. Under Metro's use of the federal program, any person who commits a crime and is found to be in the United States illegally faces a deportation process.
Today's Hispanic Notebook headlines a post about 287(g) saying "Eighty percent of Sheriff's deportations are for misdemeanors." The title is a bit misleading, however. The only reason for deportation under 287(g) is for being in the United States illegally. It may be the case that 80% of those being deported under 287(g) came into contact with law and immigration enforcement because they committed misdemeanors or other crimes, but they would likely still be here illegally had they not committed the crimes in the first place.
