With just 12 days before elections in Pakistan, President Pervez Musharraf's leading opponent was assassinated. The American government encouraged Bhutto to return with the hope she could bring democracy to Pakistan. Enjoying support in Pakistan, there was a good chance she would have been elected on January 8.
