It’s unbelievable to be writing this after the first few weeks of the season, but I think the Dores are done.

The season may well hang in the balance for Vanderbilt as Duke visits Dudley Field on Saturday. A win will make the Commodores bowl eligible for the first time since 1982, and it will take much of the pressure of a team that has so far exceeded expectations.

I sure wish Coach Bobby Johnson had made this move this time last week, but I still think starting Mackenzi Adams at quarterback gives Vanderbilt its best chance for success on the field this season:

This is a harsh thing to say on the heels of what has been an incredible Vanderbilt football season (until today), but Commodores Coach Bobby Johnson is solely responsible for a bitter 17-14 loss to Mississippi State in Starkville this afternoon.

No, I'm not talking about the VP Debate about to take place at my current school, Wash U, but about ESPN GameDay broadcasting live from Vanderbilt this Saturday. Because while this debate may or may not change the dynamics of the race, you can bet that a Vandy win over Auburn would change the dynamics of the SEC.

Is a coach who has never led his team to a winning record a likely target to be hired somewhere else? Vanderbilt is on a very short list of schools where that could happen, and it might happen this year.

It’s been said that hope springs eternal, at least in August, for the Vanderbilt football program, but those hopes are nearly often dashed by October. I can say that because I’m as eager as the next Vanderbilt fan to see the Commodores end their 26-year bowl and winning season drought.
