The KNS did a story on the possible tuition increases at UT Knoxville. I have said in the past that when you want something you need to reward it and make (or keep) it cheap to increase demand.

Here are some of the things rumored to be happening regarding state education funding for this year.

No BEP growth.

No Pre K expansion.

No teacher raises.

House bill 9 (money for school improvements based on the number of kids in the school)looks good for passage as does the energy efficiency loan/match program.

It seems some members of our our esteemed Tennessee legislature want to pay students for good grades. From what I read, similar programs in other states appear to work. I have a problem with this for a few reasons:

I haven’t really blogged about politics in a while, but.. Recently, my friend Nick received a press release from Bill Hobbs about the lottery. Knowing my history of disagreement with hobbs, he asked me what I thought about it. Rather than just respond via e-mail I figured I’d blog about it here. This is gonna be brief, since I don’t really find the lottery to be that complicated an issue.

The Gov is starting to tell what he wants to do in the new year. No real shock. Expand the baby sitting/Pre K program, Lower standards for the lottery scholarship. If he sticks to this two point plan the big fight could be with himself.
