"I wanna hand Daddy the cans!!!!” Gresham, age five, screamed yesterday.  (Though, to be fair to the kid, it’s hard to tell when he’s screaming and when he’s just talking.  He’s got a voice amplification issue of some sort.)

Today I walked the 1/4 mile down to the Bethlehem Center where they have a Second Harvest Food Bank distribution center. And upon arrival I found the door closed. And so did a couple others who arrived about the same time. One person went inside to the Bethlehem center offices where he was told that they had given away all their food and that they had closed down their food pantry permanently.

People will not endure hunger for very long - especially when food is as prevalent and abundant as it is in this country - before they begin taking matters into their own hands. I'll bet supermarkets in the area have seen shoplifting "soar" as well, too.....

Pantries not just for homeless anymore 'Working poor' seek assistance

Residents here, never shy about voicing opinions, asked the City Council on Monday night to restore funding for a food pantry and an emergency homeless shelter and told officials to cut down on perks for themselves.

The story is retold over and over: 40 percent more clients for the Salvation Army in Panama City, Fla.; 20 percent more for Urban Ministries of Raleigh, N.C.; almost 200 percent more for the Community Ministries Food Pantry in Boise, Idaho.

“Are you sure you don’t mind watching the kids?” I asked a bleary eyed Hubs last night after dinner.

“You have to go write,” he answered dully. “This is the only night this week we can do this. Go.” He waved his hand weakly in the air. “Go.”
