Since my mother died five years ago, I have discovered that I miss her the most in the autumn and during election years. Her birthday is today, and she died on October 10, 2003.

A lot of times when the wife and I are conversing about pretty much anything I always find a way to make us both feel old. For example, we will be listening to the radio and a great song from say, I don’t know, The Outfield comes on and I will be like:

Saturday, I was listening to The Beaver, which is some radio station in the hinterlands and I was having a good time because they were playing songs I have no compunction about singing at the top of my lungs, even in front of strangers–”Family Tradition,” “Shut Up and Kiss Me,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” and so on.

We spent most of last night watching the news, listening to the radio,
and time in the basement while the storm passed nearby. 21 homes were
destroyed and many others damaged in nearby Fairview where our daughter
lives, about 19 miles away. That was 8:51 pm. Another line of storms
came by at 1:51 am. It was 12 miles away. It was a scarey sleepless
night. Over two dozen persons died. It was a tough time.
