This is what freedom means to Iraqis:

  • 43% of population lives in absolute poverty

  • prior to war 19% of children suffered malnutrition; today 28%

  • last year 75% elementary-aged kids went to school; now 30%

I wouldn't want to have to run a shelter if my life depended on it. Some of the clientèle are often very difficult to please, some are mentally ill, some may be hiding from heinous acts, others may care nothing for their personal hygiene, still others may be trying to eke out their own living peddling crap to the residents. Add to this the despair, gloom, sadness and frustration so many of the Homeless suffer from as a direct result of their situations and you have one helluva volatile mix
